An interesting story of womanhood. I liked the idea of “the god of inside” v. “The god of outside”, I think that is an interesting topic to think about even today. I wish it was scarier - it’s classified as horror but I it only has some gore, no true horror and hardly a sense of foreboding. I kept waiting for something crazy to happen, but even the weird stuff was not all that weird. Overall, it was a decent feminist tale in the early 1900s, and I enjoyed the journal format, but I probably wouldn’t necessarily recommend or read again.

The book is slow paced for the most part, and then the final quarter fuckin' sprints

The spooky aspects of this piece are mostly understated or sparse... frankly, a lot of the worst horrors are the perfectly ordinary treatment of people (especially women) by each other.

This book is feminist in that it has quiet simmering rage, and shows the terrible consequences of how society treats women... but it doesn't offer hope. This is a book about the problem, not about solutions.
