i admit slow burns are maybe just not for me but this didnt work as well as i wanted it to. i think my opinion on this book is slightly dampened by the fact that i read another book of a similar topic and i think that one was more effective (the spirit bears its teeth). ultimately i think this book would have benefitted from being a bit shorter

Immensely enjoyed the book. Writing is really engaging to me even though the first half of the book nothing „really“ happens to warrant „horror“. Maybe it helped that I read it in audiobook format, but i didn’t mind the slow start at all!
I would definitely categorize this as female rage and the story at large has many feminist themes. However, the female lead is no heroine or not even a person to idolize as a feminist. If you keep that in mind, you will enjoy the story a lot more! Other than that I recommend going in to this relatively blind for the best experience.

Not written with much subtlety, which could have been to the benefit of the narrative if it seemed a deliberate choice, but I don't get the impression it was. None of the characters have much nuance and the narrator is thuddingly naive even before she starts to lose her mind.

Diary entry narratives can be hard to pull off, and I had a couple bad laughs from this one--one day, writing "Father was here;" the next day "I was so upset yesterday, I could only write one sentence!" Yeah girl, we were there for it. I think an unreliable narrator+ diary entries could have been used to accomplish something really cool, but this is surprisingly straightforward.

It's a shame; there's the core of a good Gothic thriller in here, but the execution, in my opinion, was mishandled.
