I picked this book up expecting something more heartfelt/reflective on Alex's relationship with his brother.
I'm not saying there weren't times where this occurred, however the book felt more like a boast on Ed's talents/the bands success. Obviously this is a major part of the story, and of course music is something that tied then together. However I feel there was a lot of potential here that was missed.
The ending of the book came out of nowhere to me. 1984 is briefly discussed for a chapter or two, then bam - here's the ending. I found it odd that the relationship after this album/after Alex got sober wasn't really talked about. I know that the late 70s to 1985 were Van Halen's bread and butter, but the relationship between brothers didn't end with that album. It led to a lot of questions and me wanting to know more.
I'm not super sure I enjoyed Alex's perspective/narration - but that's a personal thing.
Additionally I felt this book wasn't super cohesive and was a little too jumpy.
Overall, I think this was an interesting read, however I don't think I would ever pick it up again or recommend it to others. However this would be great for lovers of Van Halen/music.
