A fast paced storyline and likeable heroine made this a fun ride for the middle aged mama. Perfectly written for its intended audience and has a good moral without throwing it in your face. This definitely would have been a fav back when I was the age of the intended audience. I found her about face from prim little miss to Pirate a little - well -- a little far fetched -- as it happened very quickly. But honestly its a kids books and that kind of development would take a lot more pages, so I let that go lol.

I read this book over and over again when it was first published, and to this day it sticks in my mind as one of my favorite childhood stories. I think it is in part what first informed my love of sea-faring stories, and later led me to the likes of Melville, Sabatini, and Patrick O'Brien.
A gritty, suspenseful story with a strong heroine, and a beautifully descriptive style.
