Probably one of my favorite historical novels when I was younger, and one I kept coming back to even as I got older. The attention given to how the ship was run on a functional level was interesting, and I remember that when I was writing a short story as a kid I referenced the schematics in the book at one point.
This one does have an initially slow start, but it really picks up and gets going by about the 1/3 mark. The lead character is also plucky and adaptable, which makes it fun to ride along with once she's forced to reexamine her biases.

I had hard time with my willing suspension of disbelief with the storyline. A girl traveling alone on merchant ship across the Atlantic Ocean in 1832 is questionable. Her transformation from lady to sailor,I just could not believe. I realize that it would be fun and incredibly challenging to work the ship like Charlotte does but it would never have happened. It is too big of a social jump for Charlotte and the crew.

This was a fairly good historical fiction story. In 7th grade I had to read this for literature circle, I had bought this book a month earlier (I had a ton of books to read at this point and couldn't get to it) not knowing that I was going to be reading this for literature circle. Lots of mystery and suspense
