What to Do When I'm Gone: A Mother's Wisdom to Her Daughter
Hallie Bateman, Suzy Hopkins
This book is an illustrated book that illustrates the mother’s wisdom to her daughter. It’s filled with tips, guides for her daughter to live well, from day 1 to 20000. There are also recipes that we can try in here. This book is a combination of sad & funny. I enjoyed reading it so much. But that doesn’t mean,we don’t learn anything from reading it. This book reminds us to show gratitude to the loved ones before they’re gone. It reminds us to appreciate every little things that happen around us. It reminds us to not ignore people around us that offers help. The grief is not the reason for us to stop living, instead,it’s the key to be stronger day by day. I feel like this book can be a great help when I need some humours & tips in life. Besides,it reminds me of my kind hearted mother, every mother on earth is such an angel. They treat us so well, tried their best to take care of us. So don’t forget,to thank them, hug them and show them you appreciate every single thing they did for you. Even a small effort will make her happy❤️. Don’t forget to be kind to your loved ones and people around you too!
"Day 4000: think of me unexpectedly.
Grief isn't the only byproduct of a death. And death isn't just subtraction. You're left with a treasure of memories that can be triggered by sights, sounds, smells - a record of how my life enriched yours."

I really enjoyed this book. I lost my mom 18.5 years ago and I still miss her everyday. I wish I had done something similar to this book with my mom before she passed: collected wisdom, wish and recipes. But you know - who thinks of those things before it’s too late? Or sometimes it’s unexpected and then what? Anyway - I enjoyed this book and the illustrations.
This book WRECKED me. I sobbed my way through it, but I felt so comforted that if my Mom had had the chance, maybe she would have given me similar guidance.
This works best as a gift for someone whose mother is living. It will serve as a reminder to have conversations that matter.
After the loss of a mother, it’s also a good read, but I’m feeling trepidation about gifting it to a niece who lost her mom 9 months ago...is it going to seem presumptuous? Upsetting? Consoling? I guess I’ll find out. I’ll tell her she’s welcome to read it or to destroy the book with all of her tamped down hostility...even that experience could make a fine gift.

A touching and memorable graphic novel from a mother to her daughter. Even though this book was addressed to someone else entirely, I couldn’t help but relate to it somehow because of my close relationship with my own mother in real life. A very thoughtful book! I’m most likely going to be writing a book similar to this for my future child/children hehehe. Really touching and comforting read. Will most likely be re-reading this book in the near future!

First reading Oct 2023: I really loved this big-hearted graphic novel on how to survive the loss of a loved one. It’s a book of reflections on life, ways of coping with grief, ways of not taking anything for granted. There’s humour, sadness, and lots of joy here. I think most readers would find this book helpful and life-affirming.
In some ways it’s a book specifically by this mother for her daughter (the illustrator) and in some ways it’s a more universal story for anyone coping with grief. That mix of specific and universal meant that I sometimes felt it could be more inclusive (eg less heteronormative/nuclear family-oriented) but maybe some of those parts spoke to her daughter even if not to every reader.
Second reading April-May 2025: I ordered a copy of this book a couple of months after my mom passed, as I’d read a library copy the first time and thought it was one that would be helpful to return to periodically. I’m glad I did. Of course, it reads differently, more intensely, seven months after my mom’s death and I had to take it in small doses. I’m grateful for it, though. I had the same thought about heteronormativity, nuclear family, etc so wasn’t too surprised to read that in my original review too. Still, there’s lots of helpful life advice and reminders here. ❤️

Moderate: Death, Death of parent
absolutely beautiful book of paintings and advice from mom to adult daughter, after the imagined death of mom. tender and honest.
