Initially going into this book, I found the concept really intriguing and was excited to see how being exposed to love would alter the perception of our main character. I thought the way that Ardenis was experiencing these new emotions was really moving actually, I was trying my best to remember the first times I felt the emotion he was experiencing, and it was really well written in that regard. Also, the plot did end up being really interesting to me, and I was eager to see what was coming next. The only thing was that I found a majority of the book to be very predictable. Almost all of the twists and turns I would immediately be able to guess what was happening and why, and that definitely made it a little disappointing. Regardless, I did really enjoy it and I was eager to keep reading for more, but the fact I was never really surprised or shown anything unique with how unique of a concept was a little disappointing.

I'm still conflicted about this book because the premise is intriguing, as is the overall story and plot, but it felt so underwhelming.
Starting with the writing; while it was good, it also felt underwhelming at times, which made it seem unconvincing, especially towards the characters.
Furthermore, while Ardenis' point of view was interesting, I believe the novel would have been more engaging if it had included the point of view of the other civilization, rather than just the watchers, because, to be honest, I find Ardenis' point of view to be bland at some point.
Aside from this, I find the whole forbidden love; the Ardenis & Laida pairing to be dry; there's no chemistry between the two of them, and there's no angst until the part where they part.
Damien and Eva's parts are far more interesting to me, and I hope the novel includes chapters from their standpoints. So here I am, hoping for a future release of Eva and Damien's tragic novella.
That climax and ending were both very anti-climactic for me. The parts just happened so quickly and were resolved so instantly that I didn't have time to feel anything. It happened pretty fast. The political maneuvering that took place there was abrupt and hurried.
Overall, this novel had promise. The plot is interesting and contains trope elements, but it was not fully fleshed out, which makes it underwhelming and anti-climatic. I'm hoping the second one delivers the emotions that this book should.

The ONLY reason I have given this book 4 stars is because it took me about 3 chapters to wrap my head around the world and what was going on.
TRUST ME. Stick with it. It was a page turner that had me absolutely hooked. I was sent this book as an ARC but the second I finished it, I immediately bought the second book.
I promise you won’t regret reading this series.
