Finally a horror book which I enjoyed, which gave me the chills and which I can relate to on many levels albeit I'm nonbinary/autistic and not trans/autistic. Author, you sir, I sallute, for writing and giving me the actual horror experience I have never managed to get from any TV, movies or books before.

Now that's what you call a story with teeth.

After devouring Compound Fracture in a single day, I was left with an insatiable craving for more of AJW's exceptionally soul-stirring storytelling, so I dove straight into The Spirit Bares Its Teeth. And what do you know, it's another absolute banger of a queer YA horror.

I absolutely loved how White brought the 1883 London setting to life, especially through Silas' unconventional perspective as an autistic trans boy in a society full of silly conventions and ridiculous gender norms where sexism runs rampant. And then add to that the fact that he has violet eyes, which give him the ability to see beyond the veil, and you can imagine life is Seriously Not Fun for this precious babe.

The supernatural vibes in The Spirit Bares Its Teeth were so haunting, but they are far from the true horror of this story. My heart broke for the girls at Braxton’s Sanitorium and Finishing School, but I loved seeing how they slowly bonded and found little ways to rebel in their own ways.

And do not get me started on Daphne. The true MVP, deserves to be protected at all costs. I would honestly have loved to see even more of the development of the romance between Silas and Daphne, but even as it is, they already made my heart melt. I mean, these two defiant trans babes are such a cute yet powerful couple, we love to see it.

The middle section dragged a tiny bit for me and the writing was overall maybe not as addictive and morbidly captivating as in Compound Fracture, but I still could not tear my eyes away from the page. This story is just a tragic trainwreck in the best way possible that goes down some extremely dark paths (seriously, check TWs), but I love that there's somehow still so much hope and beautiful defiance woven in between all the heartbreak, trauma and despair.

AJW is quickly becoming a new all-time fave author for me, and I will now start my mission to shove his works into the hands of anyone who will listen (or not). This is YA storytelling at its very best.
