Decent book. Interesting and cozy. I think I’ll read the rest of the series when I get the chance. It’s hard not to relate to a character who’s name is only two letters different than your own. Katie Lapp is just starting her coming of age moment and I’d like to see it through.

A plain(ha!), somewhat boring novel, but it had enough information about Amish lifestyle to keep me interested. The end, about the actual shunning, was quite sad and heart wrenching for me, but I like a book that can make me cry.

I enjoyed this book. I had previously seen the movie, so it was interesting to see the differences. I did not know this was part of a series, however, so now I need to find out where the next one picks up and goes forward with the storyline.

Read this book after watching the Hallmark movie made from it. The book is definitely better! Love the fascinating Amish culture. A very enjoyable read, looking forward to the next instalment.

A little slow in the beginning and it took a little while to get used to the lingo the Amish use, but it really pulls u in about half way through and by the end u MUST read the next one!

The verdict is out

Beverly Lewis came highly recommended as an author, and I've enjoyed the stories I've read about the Amish....Plain Truth for one....I decided to pick this book up. (I made sure to start with the 1st in the series...I hate when I read a book and find out I started in the middle of a story!) So far, the verdict is out. The story is interesting enough, though a bit predictable. Without giving away too much...Katie is about to marry the local Bishop. She is an older (by Amish standards) bride, and worried that if she doesn't make this marriage she will be 'passed over'. You see, Katie has always had the problem with being attracted to beautiful, but forbidden "englisher' things....satin, guitar music, etc. She also lost her first love in a drowning accident. Days before the wedding, she finds a beautiful satin baby dress with the name 'Katherine Mayfield' inscribed...hidden away in the family attic! Her parents deny knowledge of the dress...but then hide it again. Katie has had doubts about the marriage all along, but believes she will 'learn' to love the Bishop. But chaos ensues when Katie learns the night before the wedding that she is NOT who she believes herself to be. As I said, the story is predicatable, and if you've read this far, you probably know that. If the story ended here, I would rate it as boring. But the story ends with an obvious lead in to a sequel...and for that reason is intriguing. IF that book and the next tie up loose ends in an entertaining, though possibly predictable manner, I will consider this book as one long lead in, and feel that possibly, the story could have been shortened into one or 2 books. But as I say...the verdict will not be in until I read the other parts of the trilogy.

A wonderful story of a girl raised Amish but born English. Such issues she will encounter in this book. A big twist in the story right at the end will leave you ready for more.

Many reviews claim this book as being predictable. As I read it, I think the predictability of it was intentional. It's all about finding the "how". As the reader, you know she's adopted. You know the answers you thought of for other questions are most likely true as well. However, this book gave an insight to the life of the Amish community. The women must be submissive. When you are shunned, your family as well as the community doesn't talk to you or recognize you. They believe this is the way of God. My only problem was with the ending. I do realize now that this is the first book in a series, but the ending wasn't strong enough to lead to the next book. Though I can predict what that one will be about, but it won't stop me from reading it.

I am reading this trilogy because I foolishly watched the movie on the Hallmark channel....only I didn't realise it was a trilogy and so I got absorbed in the story (and it made me SO MAD) and I HAVE to see how it ends. So I'm reading these "quickies" to finish the story and get over the suspense. ;) It's okay. Her writing style is better and less-cliched than most. But oh my goodness, the plot strikes deep at my heart right now--what happened in that Amish community was so awful and yet so many "conservative homeschoolers" do the SAME THING. :P Argh.

Physical/audiobook (audible) - such an intriguing start to the series surrounding Katie (Katherine) and how the lies of her parents have uprooted her entire thoughts in her Amish life. Such a sad tale of loss with a massive cliff hanger showing that maybe just maybe Katie’s new found knowledge is a blessing in disguise.
