Short, kind of "quiet"(?) book with good commentary on cultural expectations, feeling isolated due to them, and how that experience can shape people very differently (ahem, Shiraha...). Keiko reads as neurodivergent and may be on the ace spectrum. I enjoyed her point of view and actually found her descriptions of her work relaxing. It was a little startling to see how indifferent she was to everything, even Shiraha's extreme incel-ness...I wanted to strangle him and Keiko was just vibing. šŸ˜† The ending was strange and unsettling - Keiko believes it's a happy one, but is it?

AUTISM! My heart broke a little every time Keiko said something about needing to be cured. Glad this book is a flat arc—Keiko realizing that she was happiest at the beginning of the novel—I think there’s too few of them out there. Not a loveable book, but I hope readers recognize, after reading it, how painful a concept being ā€œnormalā€ is to anyone who isn’t.

This book hit me hard in the feels. It’s a look at Keiko’s life trying to fit into what society deems ā€œnormalā€ as she grows up and works 18 years at a convenience store. She mimics the people around her to seem ā€œnormalā€ so that people don’t try to fix her or don’t ask her why she is weird or at a ā€œdead end jobā€. Convenience store woman’s is a hard look at how we treat people who don’t fit the status quo in society, capitalism and what is expected of women in our communities.
