“Did something happen?” Kei asked in a whisper.
She couldn’t say anything for a while. Then in an unconvincing tone she said, “Oh nothing. Nothing.” Water flows from high places to low places. That is the nature of gravity. Emotions also seem to act according to gravity. When in the presence of someone with whom you have a bond, and to whom you have entrusted your feelings, it is hard to lie and get away with it. The truth just wants to come flowing out. This is especially the case when you are trying to hide your sadness or vulnerability. It is much easier to conceal sadness from a stranger, or from someone you don’t trust.

I was looking for a book that could be considered a light read, something inspiring, a little heart-tugging, and maybe tear-jerking. Before the Coffee Gets Cold was exactly what I was looking for. The small cast of characters and the consistent setting of an old basement cafe in Tokyo felt comforting and nostalgic. I could picture every character in my head and it was as if I was at a coffee table watching every scene that unfolds. I was initially distracted with the seemingly many character introductions, but then I realized that each new character introduced in an act is relevant to the next act. This kind of storytelling really stitches the different acts of the play/book together and makes the whole reading experience very uniform. So overall, I had a very enjoyable reading experience and I can’t wait to read the rest of this series.

Ugh this book just hits me right in the feels. I can't believe I thought this would be a happy, sci-fi book -_-
This book is about a basement cafe that can teleport people back in time but under strict rules. And each story follows the travel of the people associated with the cafe.
The plot is creative, each story strikes right in the heart-- both happily and sadly. The writing style is really simple but I suppose gorgeous. The pacing, though, is quite slow at times but it's really worth it if you can get through it. Since I usually read fast-paced books, that's probably why I wasn't used to the slow pace. The characters have distinct personalities and are likable. I also really like the book's format. Overall, it's a really enjoyable and short read.

I found this book to be incredibly dry and exhaustively boring. I couldn't for the life of me understand why we had to spend multiple pages in each "scenario" to explain how the cafe works; it's already been explained to us, the reader, so it can be glossed over going forward. Also, they really lost me with the final story, where the woman is just like, chill with dying so she can give birth to her daughter. I find that trope to be so fucking trite. Like, well of COURSE that's going to have a big emotional impact on your readers, can you actually TRY and come up with something original?
