The chapters were super long. Each one was someone else’s story. I enjoyed the found family. I contemplated DNFing this book multiple times but pushed through. Will not be reading any more of the series.

⭐️⭐️.5

Thoughts: Initially, I didn't really enjoy this. I didn't find myself wanting to finish it quickly or deeply hooked.

However,
Since reading it and having time to reflect and think about the book, it is actually quite cute! I like the concept of the 'magic' and the stories that were told were sweet.

Wow this is one of my new favorite books! It really made you reflect on life and how things work out and if you change your perspective on things , it opens a whole new potential of living life in a better way.
I enjoyed how the rule of the cafe was that you can time travel but you cannot change the present. I thought this was an interesting concept because in a lot of books where time travel is a component, you CAN change the future. I also enjoyed how all the stories were interconnected and dug into matters like love and family. My favorite story I think was the last one, about Kei and her daughter. And how she was able to meet her daughter in the future despite passing away during birth. It made me tear up how all the characters in the book were battling different issues, like a lover moving away temporarily, a husband with dementia, a sister dying and meeting your daughter in the future after you pass away. These are all such heavy topics and it amazed me how the characters were able to time travel and change their perspective rather than the situation. Perhaps changing your perspective on things is the best way to live a happy life. And communicating with your loved ones.

This was amazing: 4,3,2,1 (rating order). It was so moving and sad, the quotes were perfect. Whilst it was a fantasy book, very little was exaggerated- instead there were just tragic tales of peoples tragic lives. And whilst not everything magically got resolved- as some books make happen, everyone got their version of a happy ending- “the present didn’t change, but the people did”. My favourite thing has to been the linking between each of the chapters- eluding has to be my favourite technique it just makes the book seem so well planned, and written as there is a sense of flow. I love how all of the characters were with each other, there were a family. I can not put into words the sheer emotion that this book conveyed, it left me in tears on more than one occasion. I adore it. Tomioka so badly just wanted to be loved, and I don’t think there’s a person in this world who doesn’t relate to that. Whilst I wasn’t a fan of the miscommunication trope, I loved the innocence of the story. The second story absolutely broke me because of how much I could relate to it. They say the thing worse than death is living with it, and living with someone who essentially isn’t alive in their mind is just as bad. My grandpa began to forget a lot, even me on an occasion, near the end I really just wanted to hear him tell me one of his stories. Sometimes he thought I was my mum when she was younger- even though I look nothing like her, for some reason it gave me hope that deep down he knew who we were. Ms fugsaki was so strong in her heart and her mind, I loved her for it. She loved her husband selflessly and with everything she had, and even in his moment of fear and oblivion, it was always her she remembered, even if he didn’t actually remember her. As for the story of the sisters, I’ve always considered regret to be one of the most damming emotions, you inflict pain on yourself with no positive outcome. She regretted everything, and whilst she worked hard to fix it, she could never get that time with her sister back- if only they had spoken properly. I didn’t like however how they made her decision seem selfish, everyone deserved to live the life they decide and not one forced on them by obligation. Even if it was selfish that was in her right. And for my favourite story, this one left me hollow. Out of everyone kei deserved her miracle, for both her and her daughter to live. This was one of the links that I liked the best, that they both used their chances on one another, that they both got their peace, to say thank you and goodbye. I never thought the word “mum” could be so devastating. Kei was selfless until the end, she was by far the strongest character. My heart also goes out for her husband because he had to live with it, to live with her death for the sake of his daughter life, I can’t imagine morning her could have been easy because he had a daughter to raise. It was completely and devastatingly heart wrenching.

Before the coffee gets cold is a brilliant story about familial love and frienship. Each character has a unique personality and their own lovable quirks and I for one will  definitely be reading the rest of the series to come back to the amazing cafe Funiculi Funicula once more.

Heartwarming, although sometimes the translation seems uneven.
