This book has a really drab start, and the characters begin exceedingly bland which makes the book hard to get into. Getting past the first half, however, the book picks up a bit in the second half, though in my opinion the drawnout buildup to the conclusion was mildly unnecessary and could have been filled with more useful content. As the reader gets to know the characters a bit more, there is some clever banter that's rather enjoyable. It's definitely a fun albeit somewhat gorey MG/YA novel that pokes fun at a lot of fantasy genre tropes while simultaneously falling into them.

Enjoyed this much more than I thought when I started! The narration was… definitely my least favorite part. Had to put it on 1.75x speed to get through it and it was still just off. Very stilted, almost monotoned reading experience…

Besides that, I enjoyed the overall plot and characters. Id say this is a more plot focused book than character based, at least compared to my other recent reads. Pretty good mystery element and I did appreciate the alternating pov’s though Im not sure it was 100% needed…

Definitely going to read the next book, and am excited for it to come out soon!! 2 things I hope for the next book is: 1. Better narration for the audio 🤷‍♀️ 2. More character external dialogue and development!!

This book is just great fun. The sunshine/grump trope is entertaining, and creates likable characters. The fantasy side characters are amusing - shout out to the sassy frog. Evie verges on annoying perfect - my least favourite trope is pseudo flawed women but she gets enough character development that she becomes a bit more fleshed out. There's not a lot of subtly to the writing, but that's not what you come to the comedy fantasy based off a tiktok skit series for. The editing is a bit patchy, at one point a side characters name randomly changes for a chapter. But I still enjoyed the book massively and will absolutely be coming back for book 2
