hopeful mysterious tense slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot

This was such a compelling idea and I loved the slow rollout of apocalypse at the beginning, I found it really well done. That said, this book ultimately didn't work for me at all.

The long and short of it is that I felt like the community had way too many internal problems and not nearly enough external problems. I just have a hard time believing that a community that was already largely self-sufficient and seemed quite functional pre-apocalypse, that had a long history of surviving independently and had TWO years worth of food store would fall apart so completely. And I also don't believe that more people wouldn't show up from surrounding towns and try to take their resources. The reservation was left largely alone and there didn't even seem to be environmental impacts from more humans living the cities and moving out into the surrounding areas to try and find food.

Like I just don't believe that people would start following this random, deeply sketchy white guy who is totally dependent on the community he's shown up in and then immediately begins advocating for cannibalism (and also eating the people in the community when there is a perfectly good stranger corpse outside town??).

Just consistently whenever people made choices I was like "that seems unlikely." Not even stupid, which people do, but unlikely. After the first several chapters I rarely bought anyone's motivations and that was a shame because I loved the idea of this book and I felt like it started off strong.

Pretty simple, to me. I almost wonder if I'm missing something. Characters are very straightforward, syntax, plot. Interesting concept but not a lot of complexity in the execution. This is my first impression, at least.

Compelling story, but told in a very distant way

3.5
I found this book on a recommended winter read list. I thought the narration and building the story around the Wendigo made this an interesting apocalypse tale. It was also another way to learn about a First Nation’s ‘rez’ life. Where this story seemed to lose a bit of luster or keep my interest for a full five star rating: many of the characters felt flat - I wanted to know more about them, and the dialog sometimes felt forced or unnecessary.
