DNF. Long rant ahead. Contains spoilers.
First of all, I can't with the writing style. It had so many grammar mistakes (I hate to be the grammar police but this is a published book for Pete's sake) and inconsistencies (like Ms. Shirley was sometimes called Ms. Ryan). The over the top descriptions like the sepia eyes and the cinnamon or walnut colored skin (wtf) made me cringe, and the timeline of events were all over the place it gave me whiplash.
Second, and this is important. Aaron is a piece of shit. He missed 5 years of his children's lives because of a "fiance" that he never told Patience about but when he learned the truth, he threw a temper tantrum, blamed Patience for not telling him when he knows whose fault it really is, then proceeded to blackmail her into marrying him or else he'll take the children away from her like the fucker he is. They got married like he wanted and then he's all deciding and implementing things on his own for Patience and the twins when he hasn't even earned the right, damn him.
Oh and even before all of that, he assaulted Patience when they saw each other at a sex club that Patience was forced to attend because he got jealous because another man was talking to her, dragged her to an empty room then raped her because "you're MINE". Who the fuck said so, dude? You? With that attitude?
Seriously, Aaron is such a red flag. I couldn't stomach his toxicity. I feel so bad for Patience though. She sacrificed years rearing her children on her own before this lump of a man came barging in and demanding everyone bend on his will. Dude doesn't even grovel let alone apologize for his wrong doings it's like he only sees himself. So selfish, so infuriating.
Finally, Patience had no backbone whatsoever. She just let Aaron trample all over her, doesn't make him grovel and forgives him with just a flick of a hand. Girl, no amount of horny will make me forgive Aaron Townsend's shit. He will not be touching me after everything he'd done.
The concept had so much potential. I love secret baby tropes but this ain't it for me. I know I'm only at the 26% mark and maybe it will get better but no amount of grovelling will redeem Aaron Townsend for me.

I read on Kindle and read along on Audible. This was a single voice audio, and while it was okay, it reminded me how far we've come with multiple voices in audiobooks.

I would like to start this off by saying I am SO GRATEFUL that Storygraph has a 0 Star option. IF I COULD GIVE NEGATIVES I WOULD.
This being my first hate review I want to make it special. The work of garbage that is this book is astonishing. It’s everything wrong with BWWM romance. But we will not get into that just yet. Let’s go over the issues in this story. (Before anyone has an issue with anything I HAVE READ DARK ROMANCE, and babes the guy at least has some rational , this guy does not).
Dumpster Fire Plot : This book opens up with our FMC at the age of 14 getting ready for her father’s big business meeting. She would much rather stay in her room and read. Obviously in order for our love interest to notice she’s “not like other girls” she has to go to the dinner and feel uncomfortable being around GROWN MEN (Like yeah ANY BLOODY 14 YEAR OLD WOULD FEEL LIKE THAT). We meet our MMC and yeah he’s hot (I like the freckles) but he’s also IN HIS 20s?!!!? I definitely think that could have been handle better but believe it or not we have bigger fish to fry. We get a flash forward to the present. She's the mother to the MMC TWINS. (To put that woman through the torture of one birth to that god awful man is one thing but TWO. JAIL TO THEM ALL). Let’s skip over the other crap that happens and come in at the point where the MMC serves the FMC with papers. She has two options marry him or fight him in a loosing battle for custody…are we okay? Like what part of this is hot?!?!? Obviously again to move the plot again and give us unnecessary tropes we have forced proximity. It’s a shame we can’t force this man into a jail cell. From this point she’s is told she no longer can drive herself anywhere, she can not have a job, and she has no say in what the kids can do, OH OH OH ANDDDD she has to have more kids by him she has no say. (Doesn’t he sound like lots of fun???) but it’s okay folks HES A GOT A BIG DICK AND BANGS THE RED FLAGS AWAY. I have never seen a couple just bang their problems away, and I have read my fair share trashy romances. EVEN IN THE QUESTIONABLE BOOKS THEY SPEAK AFTER THE SEX. I read for the fantasy of man who can not only bend me over but for him to also care of me mentally. And my god this guys has no other thoughts than “I’m man I need walnut pussy now” (her skin being mentioned as walnut coloured every other chapter is crazzzzzy). SO MUCH OF NOTHING HAPPENS. this guys also sees Casper when he’s alone….WHAT ARE WE DOING?!?!? Like be one good thing not a bunch of crap. ALSOOOOO Casper the ghost IS NEVER EXPLAINED. Its no ones dead mother, a long lost friend. This ghost is just someone who can come to him and help him see the big picture...OH AND THE FMC GETS KIDNAPPED?!!!? I felt exhausted by the end of this book. Death to them all. The writer, editor (if there was one) and Kindle Unlimited. Jeff I’m looking at you.
Trash Writing: listen. I didn’t come here for Charles dickens, Jane Austen, NOT EVEN Dr. Sesus. I came to read raunchy sex, and for a BLACK woman to be loved OFF. This book DEFINITELY has raunchy sex but the black woman be loved off?!?! News Flash by the 3rd touch her and you die YOU START LOOKING A WEIRDO. Also I’m sure the author didn’t mean for this but let’s talk about it anyway. When writing a BWWM Billionaire romance where the main guy is a dick and has a boat load of money that probably came from generational wealth and slaves its a bit questionable when he's this possessive...cause you repeating "You're mine" it starts looking slavey if you catch my drift. Do we need to have a sit down group discussion on why a white man claiming ownership on a black woman is wrong? Like we get it, only your dick can enter this ride but saying she belongs to you (and not in the Tay Swift way) is kind of oh idk slave master x slave romance vibes. Because as a white man I dare you tell me I can’t work?! All you want to do is have sex?!? LIKE OKAY BUDDY I DO HAVE OTHER THINGS TO OFFER THAN MY WALNUT SKIN. The pacing in this book can be related to explosive diarrhea. Once you get the wave, you are hit with pain, tears and no sign out. Once it’s over and you think you have made it out BAM you got shit down your leg. ALL BEFORE THE 29% mark we are introduced to a sex club encounter, touch her and you die 3 times, daddy issues, mommy issues, a ghost that only the MMC can see (only those from his mothers side of the family?? Idk anymore), the marriage of no choice and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Let’s start forcing people into writing camps, real editors and having actually friends who would roast you alive for writing something this bad. While we are on poor writing, he’s a billionaire…his brother is a fire fighter???!?…another brother is a real estate empire and the final one maybe in the NFL?!? Again PAY FOR EDITORS. This author although being a black woman must hate her own kind. This is a hate letter to black woman everywhere. I am so repulsed by this book that I would like Dr. Umar to insult me for reading this. In his wise words "BLACK QUEENS FOREVER SNOW BUNNIES NEVER" and now that applies to men. I understand why people hate BWWM romance. You can add me to that list. Dr. Umar I have failed you.
Tropes to make up for lack of writing: I LOVE ME A GOOD TROPE. friends to lovers, jealousy, she fell first he fell harder. ALL OF IT however, when your main goal is to shove as much tropes in a book as possible you run into the problem of writing complete booty hole trash. I.E. this book. Again I LOVE ME A GOOD TRASHY ROMANCE this ain’t that. Casper could have honestly stayed dead because half way through you forget that the ghost exists. NOW LETS TALK ABOUT THE JEALOUSY IN THIS BOOK. IF YOU FOUND THIS ATTRACTIVE LETS ALL SIT IN A CIRCLE WORK THROUGH OUR DADDY ISSUES. THIS MAN GETS JEALOUS OF HIS NEWBORN TWINS GETTING BREASTFED. BREASTFED. NEW BORN TWINS. LIKE FRESH OUT THE WOMB. I think that was what really pushed me over the edge. He treated this girl as if she was property and not a person and she let him?!?!?! My sisters in Christ STAND UP.
In the end this romantic thriller made me belly laugh for how stupid it was. I pray this author had learned from her mistakes but from her TikToks I can tell everyone loves this so who cares am I right?! Did I have fun? for maybe 20% of this book. Will I ever read from this author again? Not even if I have a gun to my head.
Complete and utter perfection! From start to finish! It was so good I didn’t even mind the pregnancy and that says a lot. I love both characters and they have the cutest kids!!!! I’m at a lost for what else to say cause the book and plot was so well written. I’m definitely gonna read the other books in this series. And the spice!!!!!!!! This book was so hard to finish, but I needed to see it thru. I gave it a chance becuz the description the author had on a tik tok video, but I don't think I'll finish this series at all. I don't have an issue reading books with nonblack characters. However, it wasn't that apparent that there was a black character here. The author mainly writes interracial romances & that isn't an issue, but Patience could very well have been a white woman had it not been for the description of her looks. 1.5/5 ⭐️
