This is the fourth or fifth time I've read this book. The first time I read it was sometime in the late seventies, when I was 13 or 14.

Scared the living shit out of me at the time. The only non-fiction book I've read that can do that.

Now, I'm reading it because I had listened to the You Must Remember This podcast series on Manson and Hollywood and it kindled the need to re-read this.

To this day, I am amazed that such crazy fuckers could do such horrendous, horrific acts with absolutely no remorse. The family gave hippies such a bad name. The irony is they were just a bunch of fucking racists.

The sixties were dying before Manson came on the scene. He was the final nail in the coffin.

I … have no idea why I thought I enjoyed this book the first time I read it. It’s dry, and dull, while being needlessly over the top in its descriptions of the victims and the crimes. I had to take three separate extended breaks to drag my ass through this book, and normally I’d just DNF - but I remembered enjoying this book and was convinced that SOMEWHERE in here was the sauce I once liked.

Now it stands as a reminder that lawyers will judge you as black and white, the police departments do not give a single shit about you, and the media can and will warp reality.
