The prosecuting attorney, Vincent Bugliosi, recounts his experience in the Manson Murders that shook the country. From the Tate murders, the search, the mystery, the trials, sentencing, and where the family members are now - it is all here.
This might be the first true crime that I didn't really enjoy. I think that's entirely my fault because I just don't find the Manson murders or Manson himself that interesting. That led to me being relatively bored. I felt like this book was pretty dry but I'm not sure how it was supposed to not be dry. I somehow found his retelling of the jury trial more interesting than the part where the murders take place and the police are trying to figure out who did it and why. Once we got to that part, I enjoyed myself a lot more.
I listened to this on audiobook and while the narrator was good, I think I would have gotten more out of a physical edition which comes with 50 pages of photos.
Overall, 3 stars, sorry.

Um, wow. And here I thought I knew about the Manson Murders...
This is quite a long book and incredibly detailed, but wow, is it fascinating. The trial proceedings were explained in painstaking detail, and the unraveling of the whole Helter Skelter story was laid out impeccably. And it has to be—it’s so bizarre, you wouldn’t even believe it otherwise!
Highly, highly recommend.

I read this book several years ago. I believe I borrowed it from my sister. This book is considered a must read if one is interested in the Manson family and the murders they committed. I thought it was a good book at the time that I read it. Now, having read more books on this subject, this book seems a lot less great now.

Oh my gods. This was SO long. It took me almost 6 months to listen to the audiobook.
It’s been a while since I’ve read this, but it’s an incredibly in-depth account of the Manson family murders and consequent trial. Vincent Bugliosi is great at telling a story and even though this is a large book he does not ramble and it is not repetitive. However, over the years as I’ve gotten older and have watched many true crime documentaries and read much more true crime books, I do wonder just how much of this book is FACT and how much is a biased narrative that Bugliosi spun in order to sell a story in court. I’m not suggesting that the perpetrators did not commit these crimes. I believe they did! I am suggesting that you should read this book but do so with an open mind.
