closer to 3.5/5! could have been more concise but learned so much about the case and i thought i knew most of it!! spooky stuff!

A very insightful, intense and detailed description of the Manson Murders.

This book is far from an easy read, t's not for it's language though some of the legal jargon did sometimes need some googling for this ESL speaker/reader. It's a lot cause this is a story that doesn't seem real but we know these horrific things took place.

I recommend it for people curious and fascinated by crime and serial killers, but only those who can handle some really graphic descriptions of the crimes committed. I had to take breaks from looking at the images in this book as a very emotional person the Tate-murder was especially hard to read about.

wow

So let me start off by saying I didn't really know much about the Manson family going into this. I knew the basics, the things that everyone knows. I came away from this with a lot of knowledge.
Bugliosi does a great job of laying out the facts of the case in a way that makes this book read like fiction rather than nonfiction.
One of the most shocking things about this case was the way that the evidence was treated as it was being collected, as well as just the difference in the investigative process then versus the present day. It really shows just how far we have come in terms of forensics which was fascinating to read about.
I think the other thing that is the most shocking is just knowing that there are people like this in the world, people who are actually just evil. We get a little insight into the background of Manson himself as well as some of the family. The little bit we learn lends itself to why these girls were so easily manipulated and partially why Manson turned out the way he did. That is if you give stock to the nature vs. nurture theory.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. Though parts could be a little dry because it is nonfiction after all, the writing itself and the way the story of the murders and subsequent trial unfolded was very well done. The pacing through the book was also good. If you are at all interested in true crime stories and have not read this one, I highly recommend that you do so.
*I listened to this book narrated by Scott Brick via Audible and Brick does a wonderful narration of this story.
dark informative sad medium-paced

Reread this year as I was coming off of a Bailey Sarian True Crime kick to cope with a book slump. This novel is such a dense recounting of one of the darkest true crime stories that I have ever heard. While it is no wonder that American society was, and still is, grotesquely fascinated by the Manson murders, this novel always makes me wonder just how people can go so far. It is crazyyyy to think that cult influences can lead people to go so far. While we all know the out come, this novel takes you deep into the details and potential timeline.

Erschreckend.

Can sometimes feel like a difficult read with all the legalese, but a fine piece of true crime in any case. Structure of the story is memorable: begins with bios of the victims, then bios of the killers, then the investigation, trial, and verdict. The ending is jarring because is summaries the sad fates of everyone associated with the Family, then goes on to discuss all the other serial killers and mass murderers post-Manson. Leaves you feeling both satisfied and helpless.
