David Golder não é um homem simpático, é um homem de negócios de 68 anos, que passou a vida a trabalhar e a ficar rico, sustenta uma esposa, filha, gigolôs e sócios, mas está cansado e quando fica doente do coração é abandonado por todos. Por amor à sua filha, decide lutar uma última batalha que pode provocar-lhe a morte.
Esta é uma história bastante madura sendo o primeiro livro publicado de Irène Némirovsky, com personagens que só pensam em dinheiro, fúteis, desesperadas. A única coisa que me incomoda em relação a escrita de Némirovsky é o anti-semitismo patente em muito dos seus livros, sendo ela uma judia (não praticante), retrata os judeus como gente que só pensa em dinheiro em detrimento ás pessoas, retrata-os fisicamente como mais tarde o governo de Hitler o faria, eu sei que naquela época essa ideia era comum mas não deixa de me incomodar, o que é pena já que gosto dos seus livros mas vou continuar a minha leitura pela sua obra.

La penna della Nemirovsky mi conquista sempre! Per la prima volta la protagonista non è femminile, anche se il tema del travaglio familiare è sempre presente!

Quizás se pueda decir que 'David Golder' es como 'La muerte de Ivan Ilich' de Tolstoi pero con más sarcasmo y mala leche, y no tan triste y deprimente, aunque también lo es un poco a ratos. David Golder es el arquetipo del hombre hecho a sí mismo, el hombre que de niño se moría de hambre y que iba descalzo por las calles pero que ha prosperado hasta convertirse en un hombre de negocios sin escrúpulos y sin amigos. Tiene una mujer que es el prototipo de mujer rica, a la que sólo le interesa lucir sus joyas e ir a grandes fiestas, y una hija que es el prototipo de hija mimada y consentida, que hace mil monerías a su padre sólo para sacarle dinero por sus incontables caprichos. Un buen día, su socio muere y a él le fastidia un montón que se haya muerto precisamente ahora y que tenga que pasar por el engorro de ir a dar el pésame a la viuda y al entierro. Y cuando ve que nadie siente pena por el pobre difunto, se empieza a dar cuenta de que cuando él se muera, le pasará lo mismo, porque nadie va a llorar por él: toda su vida se ha partido el lomo trabajando y nadie se lo va a agradecer. Vaya panda de desagradecidos.
Los personajes son exageradamente egoístas y notablemente despreciables, pero aún así acabas sintiendo pena como mínimo por Golder, porque Némirovsky retrata tan bien su sufrimiento, su dolor físico, su rabia, su frustración, y el miedo a la muerte. De entre los secundarios me ha encantado Hoyos, porque es muy lúcido, se lo toma todo como una broma y es un vividor ya entrado en años que va sobreviviendo como puede, incrustándose como un parásito allá donde puede. No me ha parecido tan buena como 'El baile', pero también me ha parecido buenísima. Es amarga y divertida a la vez. Némirovsky, otra vez, no tiene piedad en criticar las costumbres y las vilezas de los ricos. Y escribe con un estilo tan directo y tan fresco, tan vívido, y sabe crear personajes que, aunque son arquetipos, van más allá del tópico y destilan humanidad, aunque sea una humanidad llena de defectos. Y el final cíclico y regresivo, duro y desesperanzador, me ha encantado. Muy pero que muy recomendable. No sólo porque a mí me encanten los libros que se atreven a mirar la muerte frente a frente.

This book, the author’s second book, written in her early twenties, was quite an accomplishment for someone so young. Set in 1920’s France, it charts the excesses of life just before the Depression, and tells the story of David Golder, a Jewish man from the Ukraine, who became rich through speculating on oil, and lives in opulence between Paris and Biarritz.
The story charts the downfall of Golder. After cruelly refusing his business partner at the opening of the novella, his partner goes on to commit suicide the next day. From this event on, life as Golder knows it, begins to implode. Suffering a health crisis, his family rather than supporting him, worry about where there money will come from now.
His wife, Gloria, and daughter Joyce are both ruthlessly mercenary and care nothing for him as a person. His wife has a lover with whom she openly lives in Golder’s property in Biarritz, and later we learn that he is the real father of Joyce. These characters are what lets the novella down in my opinion, as they seem to have no redeeming features whatsoever. Golder, while mercenary and ruthless, however has a vulnerable side which for me makes me root for him. He has a genuine but foolish love of his daughter, Joyce, and always gives in to her whims. Money is the only way he knows how to interact with his family and he uses it to uphold appearances. I felt the illness that befell him and his aging body letting him down was also very well portrayed and again showed a real human vulnerability.
The story reminded me quite a lot of “Death of a Salesman”. However the characters were quite one-dimensional by comparison.
Overall it was quite a good book, I enjoyed the premise of the story but there were aspects that I felt could have been better, namely more fleshed our characters. The tone was quite grim and offered little by way of hope. It did give a good picture of the lifestyle of the wealthy of that era, and made me as a reader, question, what is it that really matters in life… What opportunities did Golder miss to redeem himself, all in the name of money and more money…

David Golder, romanzo d’esordio della Némirovsky, è un libro che parla del denaro e di come il suo potere sia in grado di soppiantare i sentimenti e sopprimere ogni traccia di umanità. È una storia dura, piena di odio e di persone abbiette per le quali un gioiello è più importante di una vita. Una lettura che pone delle domande e fa profondamente riflettere sulla meschinità dell’essere umano, sulla sua moralità e sui suoi valori. Mi chiedo perché abbia atteso così tanto prima di leggerlo...

Jostain syystä tämä Nèmirovskyn kirja oli hautautunut lukupinooni vuosikausiksi, vaikka saman kirjailijan muut suomennokset ovat olleet minulle upeita lukukokemuksia. Ehkä kirjan aihepiiri, rahan ja ahneuden maailma, tuntui vieraalle? Lukukokemuksena tämä oli vahva ja vaikuttava, pidän Némirovskin tavasta kuvata tapahtumia ja ihmisiä, jotka tosin olivat tässä kirjassa varsin vastenmielisiä - petollisia, ahneita, toisiaan julmasti hyödyntäviä. Rahamies David Golder oli tosin kirjan loppua kohti - rahansa, terveytensä ja ihmissuhteensa menettäneenä - varsin surullinenkin hahmo.
Kirjan teemat ovat yllättävän ajattomia, tämähän julkaistiin jo vuonna 1929. Lukiessa ajatukseni pomppivat väistämättä meneillään olevaan Ukrainan sotaan. Jotain oleellista kiteytyi pilalle hemmotellun tyttären, Joycen, sanoihin: " Minä haluan elämässä ihan kaiken tai sitten kuolen mieluummin!"
