I listened to the audio while following along in my physical copy ...

I have to say this surprised me a bit.

I fell in love with the Italian inspiration, along with a touch of religion.
*it was in the background [using words like disciples and saints]

I also loved the mystery surrounding the murders going on in this town.

I was so invested ... especially in the rebels in the town.

Even when I guessed one of the paths for the main plot, I was not certain on the who.

Definitely will consider reading book 2.

In M. K. Lobb's debut novel, Seven Faceless Saints, Roz and Damian undergo the horrendous task of solving murders for those who shouldn't have been able to be killed. While Damian works for the disciples who sent him to war, Roz orchestrates a rebellion after the death of someone dear to her. As their paths cross, deals are made. But with every mistake and failure, Saints come closer to rising.

I will admit that this book was difficult for me to get into at first. Partially because it was a library book (and deadlines for reading don't sit well with me) but also because this world and story was so complex - in a good way! I have always longed for fantasy mysteries, of which there aren't nearly enough (and this is one of the first I've ever read), and Lobb does a phenomenal job of placing a teeth-gritting mystery into an epic setting unlike what's been written before.

I truly enjoyed the depth of the characters and the world they were placed in. The mystery was rich, vivid, and compelling. The religious system was dark, brutal, and gritty. It was everything I wanted to see in such a novel and it paid off handsomely. However, there were some inconsistencies about whether illusions could be felt or not, which put me off a little each time the swap was made. I also felt like the story was missing something fundamental to pull me in fully. I know about 30% of the way in that this novel would be 4-stars from me. However, I am excited to see this universe expanded further in the next book, Disciples Of Chaos, and the conclusion to the Seven Faceless Saints narrative. Bring on the finale!

Review in progress, short version: this is an almost perfect book. Probably would have worked better as new adult than young adult. Some of the themes and events are awkward when they seem to be sixteen or seventeen. Otherwise, stellar writing, stellar plot, actually caught me with the plot twists. Well done.
