Such a poignant book for the current government storm that we are experiencing. Was quite stressful in how poignant it was, but also was really fascinating to read a book that was written 25 years ago that aligns so much with our current world issues.

I rated this book three stars when I first read it, but bumped it to four upon rereading. I’m not sure what bothered me the first time.
It’s cleverly written in a mockery of pretentiousness by using large words and formal sentences as the language spoken in Nollop. (Friends from the States comment on the strange formality of the island language.)
The progression of the loss of letters is done well, conveying the frustration and eventual despair and insanity of the Nollopians. It’s a smart commentary on the dangers of fanaticism in any form — and how quickly that fanaticism can turn into an insatiable hunger for power.
