I understand that Romeo and Juliet it’s a classic and it reflects the values of a different time period, but ugh… Juliet is just 14 when she is pressured into marrying a man she does not know. Then she meets dearest Romeo, oh Romeo, and falls in love with him (a stranger and the “enemy” yay). Juliet is so in love with him that she cannot imagine a life without him, of course, and ends up killing herself when she sees him dead.

What bothers me about this story is how, despite being a tragedy, it is often held up as the example of romantic love when we were growing up.

taylor swift did it better

Well, well, well..... I kind of never wanted to read Romeo and Juliet in my teenage years because I thought it was over rated simply because all of my ICSE friends had it in their Syllabus and they'd boast about it as if they'd gone to the moon🙄. Whether they fail in literature or not that's a whole different story I'd keep for some other day 🤫🤭
🔸
Enough about them, let's get to the book. I read one of Shakespeare's work few months ago (a comedy) & I fell in love with the poetry in it so to no surprise this one didn't disappoint. [I have included some of my fav short quotes in the slides]
I won't lie, It took me some time to connect with the characters. For which the reason might be the Old English used so some kind of language barrier made it slightly weird especially when a character dies within 2 minutes of the book😶
🔸
I always find people complaining that Juliet was just 14 and Romeo around 18 but then it hit me, back in the days the kids did mature faster. I thought that was reasonable until I read it and realized these 2 kids were just normal 2 kids with enraged teenage hormones equivalent of the 14 year olds today talking about love as "Mein tumhaare liye kuch bhi karsakta hun" (equivalent to I can bring a piece of moon for you" First do your homework kid
The play legit starts with Romeo being depressed because this girl Rosaline he had a crush on had sworn off boys by taking a vow of chastity and next thing you know is he is swooning over Juliet.
🔸
It was more of a fantasy type romance which became acceptable to me after reading half of the book.
