“These violent delights have violent ends, and in their triumph die like fire and powder, which as they kiss consume. The sweetest honey is loathsome in its own deliciousness, and in the taste confounds the appetite.”

Drama, drama, drama— even more than in “Macbeth”

Yeah, this one just doesn’t do it for me compared to some of the other plays I’ve read thus far. I get why it’s important to have teenagers read this (learn impulse control), and there is some flowery romantic language we’ve all heard a thousand times at this point, but as far as tragedies go, this feels like the tragedy was somewhat bad decisions and a lot of deus ex machina “oh yeah, I didn’t get to send the letter because plague” in Act 5. Friar Lawrence is the real villain in this story.

It’s still better than Titus Andronicus, but I know Shakespeare wrote better tragedies than this.
