Another re read in the bag and I have to say: reading Romeo and Juliet as a teen and now again as an adult is an eye opening experience. I never heard it before but listening to these desperate star crossed lovers torn apart by the adults of their world is so topical. What a fantastic tale. Good one Mr. Shakespeare.

I think Shakespeare is the problem here, not the shallow, stupid characters. He's just too much of an effort to read, I decided after Taming of the Shrew. Sure, some of the poetry is beautiful, but a whole play full of it... You know what they say about too much of a good thing.
You know with age you realize how fickle the titular characters are and then the whole plot of the story is not so romantic and swooning as it used to be. There are still some beautiful figures of speech and use of language in the play, though, of course, but it’s definitely not the romanticized story of love that it’s made out to be. It’s hard to believe Romeo and Juliet were even truly star-crossed lovers when they barely had time to be lovers/had no real character development as to why they became lovers in the first place. Still one of Shakespeare’s greats of course but not my favorite.
