Life’s lessons are best learned with a little humor and retrospection. A pleasant read with wisdom to sit with.

3,5 ster

Quite entertaining, this book has somehow both reaffirmed and potentially corrupted my long-standing intention to take a stab at Proust himself.

I went into this book having never read Proust before and really only having the vaguest idea of who he was and what he wrote about. However, reading this book did make me want to read Proust. I appreciated the immense amount of research de Botton clearly did to write this book, including parsing through letters, essays, reviews, and other work written by and about Proust.
This book was surprisingly engaging overall, and it offered an interesting perspective on a few different topics through the lens of Proust's life and work. This is the second book I've read by de Botton, and I have found his writing style to be both accessible and intellectual. I am looking forward to reading more of his work.

Very much looking forward to starting Proust now, thanks in part to this excellent book. Well worth reading even if you never intend to actually read Proust.

I listened to this audiobook as an introduction to Proust and his writing before starting to tackle Swann’s Way shortly. I do enjoy listening to Alain de Botton’s books. He has such a learned and interesting way of writing while keeping it real and relevant to you and me.
I feel I have a bit more knowledge of the man behind the massive novel now, and more ready to start. If you are interested in learning the same, then I would definitely recommend.
