Reading this series is going to leave a hangover. I'm obsessed with the Characters, the world, and the growth from the story chapter after chapter. Highly recommend!

To start off I read the first book maybe 6 months ago so my memory was off on some details that pertained to the first book.
What I do recall from the first book was Cas' anxiety giving my anxiety... well... anxiety. It was something I wanted to like since I deal with anxiety attacks and it's something I can relate to on a personal level. While, I can relate, I read to escape my life of anxiety and not to live it. I wanted Cas to be tough and resilient and to fight her own battles while also not being naive, stubborn and unwilling to see a bigger picture than herself. She cared about her friends and beyond that I felt she couldn't see anything else. The pacing was good for a fantasy but I think non-fantasy readers going in may disagree. This is a slow-burn with little to no spice in book 1 or 2. I didn't feel as strong as a connection between Cas and Elander as I did in the first book, but it was still sweet, especially when it is revealed that she is a reincarnation of his past love. Reincarnated by the crystal that Cas carried as a reminder of Asra, which turned out to be the the heart of the sun stolen by Elander (from the sun god) to save Cas's past-self sister. Elander was supposed to steal it to give it to the rook god but since he did not that was why he lost his position as the "death god". In order for him to earn his position back he would have to kill Varan and Cas... who ended up being the lost princess. Elander discovers the crystal Cas has and finds out who she is to him and why she seemed familiar all this time. The whole reincarnation thing was a bit confusing for me. Did the sun god make it so? If so how did Cas end up with the crystal in another life?
I really thought Cas would get to visit different Gods to prove her worth to discover more about her magic and how to wield it before having a faceoff with her brother, which would have been cool. I think she asks too much of Elander to save Zed at the end and when he tried he was worn out of all his magic and she still asked him to take her to see him which in turn ended up being a trap. Tara, Elander's servant, Betrayed him to the rook god. Cas was about to strike a deal with the rook god to save elander, Caden, and her kingdom to use her as his weapon. Elander intervened and Caden grabbed Cas and went through one of the doors at elanders command and that was the cliffhanger for book 2.
I listened to audiobook while also following along on a kindle version. The narrator is phenomenal and i sometimes forgot it was just one person narrating. The confusing part was the kindle version did no match up with the audiobook so it was hard to follow along. overall a good book and i will read the next to see what happens.

okay, i LOVE fantasy series that take their time building up the world and the lore.
there’s a certain level of precision required to toe the line between spoon-feeding a reader information (FBAA) and crumbing it so hard the reader’s left bewildered and frustrated (flock — not a diss, because that’s my GIRL, but that one was undoubtedly what the hell is going on here), and twist of the blade nailed it. we got to see so much more of this detailed universe, meet cool new characters, and get some important answers to things without being overloaded and overburdened. chef’s kiss.
it got a bit redundant in the middle, but the end was a ride. more spice than the first book, a little more exciting than the first book (because the stakes are so much higher), which is why i’m giving this one 5 stars. FUN. exciting. TOG-y. with a world big enough to accommodate a lot of other stories

A great second book, obsessed with the lovers -> betrayal -> enemies (again) -> lovers (again) trope so this was perfect for me
This story is full of weird monsters , questionable decisions by the fmc, magic, meddling gods and yearning. And a cliffhanger of course
I liked it, although not as much as the first. I thought it was a little chaotic. I was almost bored with emergency after emergency. Plus Casia + friends never really had much of a plan which annoyed me. Like in the beginning after she reunited with her friends she was like "I'm gonna go sneak into Varen's room!" and do what Casia? Talk to him? Kill him? Even though you still know nothing about this shield that is protecting him? Don't you maybe want to take some time to think things through?
I wish there had been more downtime in between (and more spice
