To me this book really suffers from lack of clarity. I was confused for so much of it as I feel the world building is severely lacking. Nothing is explained or given enough time for me. For example, what is the in-between? It is so vague and diffuse that I have no idea what’s happening. I feel the same about the other kingdoms and the royals. The magic system was confusing in the first book and it continues to be so in this one.
Cas’s lack of a plan and the way she just barrels forward is not a trait I like in I character. She is also so wrapped up in plot armour and honestly pure luck that it gets ridiculous. Oh, you happen to stumble upon a random king and strike up an alliance. Good for you since you had no plans going into this.
The overall plot is just not that interesting to me. It has been done, which doesn’t have to be a bad thing, but this is not done in a way that kept me enthralled at all.
The pacing and flow feels a bit off. I found myself thinking it was like reading a novel split into episodes, where the characters go in different quests that ultimately never really connect with each other. There are no stakes as all our heroes will be back for the next quest.

Improved from the 1st in the series. Characters evolved & better developed. I was interested in the story, rooting for the MC's, but still found it somewhat lacking. I did enjoy the relationship building & the way in which the complexities of the story are coming together. Moving onto book 3.
