Honestly just so enjoyable. Quick and easy reading but still smart and emotional.
It checks all the boxes in a book. So happy I stumbled into these novels.

The pacing felt very off, and the ending was rushed. Almost felt like there was too much going on to neatly wrap up, but the story tried to wrap everything up and ended up leaving hanging threads and unsatisfying choices. overall, not terrible, but not what I was hoping for from the final book in the series.
Most fun series I've ever read. Kiva Lagos is my favorite character ever. I wish they would make this a TV show.
3.5 It's hard to wrap up a series in a satisfying way in all aspects. This book succeeded not in all, but at least in several of them.
Part of the problem were my expectations: I thought the trilogy would examine more broadly what would happen with the dissolving Interdependency, when in fact it focused mostly on political power struggles. Anything else would likely have been far too broad a scope, but I was still disappointed that there wasn't anything more concrete about the future. There were several instances of things being brushed over, and sometimes the vagueness was irritatingly obvious, like whenGhreni's reason for not taking Count Claremont's help is literally lampshaded with "for, uuuuuhhhhh, reasons - give me at least an attempt to make that make sense.
What I was positively surprised by was the relationships between the characters, I liked them a lot. (More than I liked the characters themselves.)
I did not expect the ending:Cardenia dying was a shock, her having planned for this even more so, and the more I think about it the less happy I am with it. Rachela's capabilities were set-up from the previous book, yes, but it still seemed rather more deus ex machina than I generally prefer my political plots, but I can't deny that it was also satisfying on several levels.

I put off adding this for like a week because I'm still not sure how I want to rate this. On the one hand, I really enjoyed quite a lot of it. On the other hand, I didn't like the ending very much - not that it was bad, it just...wasn't what I wanted or expected. So I'm really not sure what to rate this. For now, I'm settling on a 4, but I may revisit this and expand my review if my mind settles in a different direction.
