Dexter Is Dead

Jeff Lindsay

3.4 AVERAGE

I've enjoyed the series overall, but it was definitely time for the end. Suspense long ago gave way to me yelling at the obvious plot like a crazy person. Still, a fun ride, and entertaining.

Finically finished with this series. This book wasn’t any better than the rest- and the ending was so poorly written. So glad to finally be done with all of these books.
Such a shame - they had so much potential but never lived up to it.

A solid ending to the series. I know that the previous title in the series isn't the biggest fan favorite, but this one more than makes up for it.

Fans of the character Brian will really enjoy this one.

Better than the shows ending, I guess. I’m not sure how to describe it, but the way Lindsay wrote the end of the book, along with other scenes where Dexter is trying to regain consciousness, is not only repetitive but confusing. I really loved Brian and was actually very upset to see him die, along with Kraunauer. I thought his character was great, and though I suspected he was going to be a problem, I didn’t want it to be true. Dexter dying wasn’t the ending I wanted, but it was what he deserved. Overall, this book was pretty good. The series as a whole falls under “pretty good” as well (with the exceptions of 1, 3, and 5). Jeff Lindsay is really good at setting up stories, but not that talented as executing them. I think that the books may have been better if someone else wrote them. Just my opinion! Whole series: 3/5. Not great, not terrible, just 8 books that I made myself read because I liked the show.

Couldn’t get over the feeling that Dexter was out of the character we’d gotten to know in the previous books. Also the absence of Doakes was annoying - why didn’t he come out to gloat when Dexter was arrested?
Lastly, the unsatisfying ending made this certainly not my favorite in the series.

THIS is how the show should have ended.

So. Much. Better.

Kind of sad all my Dexter books are over now.

Well it’s all over. I have to say out of the entire series this was the boo I enjoyed the most and I only read it because I had already plowed thru the other seven. All in all I will say that the books had a hard time living up to the show. Even this book was not as dramatic as the trinity killer season. Which is probably being unfair. The book was a better ending than the series. That’s all I got.

i wasn't a huge fan of the whole series but wow i actually loved this last book

brian is just a really good character and i love his dynamic with dexter, i probably would've enjoyed the other books if he was in them more tbh

but if you're looking to get into dexter i would definitely recommend the show rather than the books, it's so much better in every way

trigger warning
gore
torture
sadism
police corruption

This book picks up directly after part 7, meaning for the first time ever, Dexter has to face consequences. This review will include spoilers for the previous installments. You have been warned.

Part eight was more fun than the previous one, it felt like Dexter got his brains back. Or the author. Whatever. Instead of having a jerk that fucks around, literally, we have a guy framed for a crime he didn't commit and trying to... not to prove his innocence because there is none to be found. Trying to stay out of prison and free to do whatever he chooses.

I could tell you, how disappointed I am by this series that started so great, that I wanted more, but instead I leave you with a few ideas for a Dexter bingo:
- devouring of pastries
- Dexter ignores his Dark Passenger despite knowing that he's always right
- use of alliterations
- description of Miami traffic
- Dexter tells the reader he is teaching Astor and Cody
- intelligent Dexter wants to solve a problem by murder
- Dark Passenger flutters his wings
- Dexter says he has no human feelings
- Dexter describes a feeling he experiences
- grinding of teeth
- comparing phony social behaviours

Great series!
