I would have rated this book 4.0 stars had the middle not been drawn out as much. The ending was not predictable.

I listened to this at 1.5x speed and was still a little bit like “yeah yeah I get it hurry up”, but when the twists came they were at least twisty? But I’m also not sure this book made sense. Whatever, it was a smooth brained “thriller” and while I didn’t find it particularly thrilling, it was just as easy listening as I expected so it did the trick in that regard.

Too many gross things for the sake of being gross and shocking.
Lots of twists in typical Freida fashion. Once I got past the occasional cringey descriptions, I enjoyed it. Not my favorite Freida book, but the audio was pretty good.

🐠 The Tenant by Freida McFadden 🐠

MY RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

Blake Porter’s life unravels after he’s abruptly fired and can’t afford his new brownstone. Desperate, he and his girlfriend, Krista, rent a room to Whitney—charming, beautiful, and seemingly perfect.
But soon, strange smells, eerie noises, and unsettling neighbors hint that something’s wrong.
By the time he realizes the danger is inside his own home, it’s already too late.

While I enjoyed reading this, I don’t think it was great. It was a quick and fast paced read with lots of plot twists, but I found them to be quite predictable. The characters also all sucked. There were so many ways this book could have ended that I felt would have been stronger, but overall, it was enjoyable to read. Also - Justice for Goldie!!!

Read this if you like:
  • roommate thriller
  • plot twists
  • unhinged characters

I guessed what was going on from the beginning, but I still finished this in one night so what does that say about me? Lol. Also, in this economy does stuff like this really matter? “The first day at the temp job goes as well as it possibly could. I mean, considering my job is basically to do filing and data entry for people who are five years younger than me.” (70) Maybe I’m biased because I’m unemployed but an income is an income my man, like who cares???? Maybe Frieda is trying to illustrate how prideful and egotistical cis men are in our society but booohooooo, I didn’t feel sorry for him that he was able to find another job and pay his bills lol. Plus five years younger than you? That’s barely a difference.

So there’s just a bunch of little things with the way that Frieda writes (like the above) that bug me, but overall, I found this story predictable, derivative (even of like, her other work too. Fine, plagiarize yourself but sheesh!). I imagine Blake sitting around with his future buddies saying, “women, amirite?” 🥲 Women are *allowed* to be the villains, but in today’s red-pill-filled-zeitgeist, I couldn’t help but roll my eyes at the idea of the scorned woman over infidelity. Sure, it CAN be devastating but omfg, women today are tiiiiiiiiiired. I also think painting people as psychopaths or sociopaths is just so overdone in thrillers idk!!!!

Anyway, who cares because I clearly keep reading Frieda’s books hahahahahahahahaha
