Pre-reading for my children
Very dnjoyable

In all my years as an educator how have I never read this book? Caleb and Anna lost their mother right after Caleb's birth. Papa send off for a wife. Sarah came from Maine to be their new mother and wife for Papa. The children fear Sarah will leave. Sarah misses her home in Maine. Such a sweet and precious story of family and love.

An excellent chapter book, simple to read and sound out but with more depth of spirit than many 300-page novels.

I am surprised with how much I enjoyed this story. I will be checking out the rest of the series. I read this story many years ago, probably as part of schooling. I remembered the main plot and wanted to read it again for my May readathon. For some reason I had not kept my copy. Thanks to Barnes & Noble I got a new one and began reading soon after. I am so glad I gave this book another try. It was such a treat to read. It is a comforting story, easy to follow and imagine. The story is from the perspective of Anna and you read about her thoughts and feelings taking care of her Papa and brother, and then meeting this woman who may or may not become her new mother. This book is part of a series and I immediately ordered books two and three (my local Barnes & Noble did not have copies on hand). If you are a fan of Laura Ingalls Wilder and her “Little House” series, this may interest you as well.

It's amazing how much you can remember of a book you haven't read in more than 20 years.

This is yet another book I wish I'd discovered in my youth. I have loved the story since I watched the TV movie so long ago, and I would have loved the book then, too. Sarah is such a great character! I'll definitely be reading more books in the series.

SYNOPSIS:
Caleb and Anna's mother died the day after Caleb was born. All that's left are memories and old stories about their mom. One day their father announces that he put an ad up looking for a wife. "Like Maggie?" Asks Caleb. Their neighbor did the same thing long ago and Maggie answered the ad, she became his wife and a wonderful mother. Sarah replies to the ad, "I will be wearing a yellow bonnet, i am plain and tall". When the children meet Sarah, they begin to remember what it's like to be a complete family again but Sarah wants to stay for a month to decide if she wants to marry or go back to her home in Maine, by the ocean. What will Sarah choose?

REVIEW:
This is a short but sweet novel that reminds people how amazing it is to have a family. It is a timeless novel that can be read again and again and still be enjoyed. Not only is the plot interesting but the reader get's to catch a glimpse of what life was like on the prairie, back in the 1800's before technology existed and when woods covered the land. This is a sweet novel that the whole family can read.

AGE RATING AND RECOMMENDED TO:
I recommend this book to anyone because it's a good read. The tale is simple so I suggest it to anyone at any age.

{My Thoughts} – Jacob is the father to Anna and Caleb. They have been doing their best to make ends meet around their property without the help of a woman. But Jacob has decided that he is lonely and he does want the help of a woman so he puts an add in the paper asking for a wife. It doesn’t take long for him to get a reply from a lady named Sarah. Sarah is not your typical woman though. She likes to do things for herself and she has lots of beliefs in independence. So once she gets her bearings she asks Jacob to teach her how to plow the fields, how to drive the wagon and how to ride a horse. She picks it all up very quickly.

All of Sarah’s independence starts to worry Anna and Caleb though. They think she wants to learn all this stuff so that she can leave them and not come back. They think that she misses her home in Maine and isn’t interested in being their dad’s new wife and their new mother. Does Sarah want to go back home? Does she want to be married? Does she want to be stuck in a land far from everything she’s familiar with? Does she want to become a mother to two children that are quickly growing up? I suppose you will need to read the book to find out.

My daughter had brought this book home, because she needed to read it for her AR program at school. I decided to read it with her, and I must say it is a nice little story. I may need to track down the other four books to this series sometime in the future.

If you like books similar to that of the Little House on the Prairie I am quite certain you will enjoy this book as well.

Sweet story about a motherless family who has someone come to stay with them. Would be great for struggling, MS readers. Quick and easy read.
