Read it with my son as part of his 5th-grade curriculum. Sweet story.

I listened to the audio book and it was short enough that I finished it in one day’s commute. I was sorry when it ended.

Anna and Caleb, whose mother died from childbirth out on the frontier, long for a mother in their lives. They are elated when Sarah comes, but worried when Sarah misses her life by the sea. The prairie is so different from Maine; will Sarah stay?

I think I read this as a child, but didn’t remember how lovely it was. As an adult, I see that it’s very short (less than sixty pages) but absolutely charming. There is a lot of story between the lines. Beautiful Newbery winner.

“There is always something to miss, no matter where you are.”

I read this a long time ago didn't remember much except that I liked it.

Wow. What a lovely little story. Thoroughly deserving of the Newberry.

I'd never heard of this until my students put on a staged production of this book.

The play was better, NGL.

I still remember it, from all the way back in grade 3. I used to want to name my son Caleb…

This is one of my favorite films, and the book is certainly equal to it. The language is simple, yet profound, and the portrait of pioneer life is vivid. My only complaint is that its very short! I look forward to reading the sequels.

i lived vicariously through sarah as a kid
