It's an actual crime that I was never exposed to this series as a child. This book is exactly what great literature for children looks like. I feel like modern children's books tend to be so fast paced and action packed because authors are afraid to lose the attention of children who are used to a world that moves a million miles a minute. Books like these teach children to slow down and appreciate the sights, smells, and sounds around them.

Great book series and great Hallmark movies with Glenn Close and Christopher Walkin.

A very sweet story exploring fear and loss of a parent at a level for young children.

Simple and sweet. And short. Basically capturing a place and a time. Really two places because we get to hear Sarah talk endlessly about the sea. And we get a flavor of what a child might have been like on the plains. There is mostly glossing over the whole idea of wifing. And for a Newbery, it got it's death out of the way before the book starts.

Another book that has been on my bookshelf for YEARS! This was such a sweet story. I’m glad I finally gave it a chance.

Read for my Writing from Fiction workshop. It was a decent book but kind of boring in my opinion. But I am really not the audience for this kind of small, intimate family story. I much preferred wilderness adventure books as a kid and still find homesteading/prairie stuff uninteresting.

That being said, it's cute. So if you like prairie/homesteading stuff, you'll probably like this book.
