Patricia did some amazing character development for such a short story. With this, you are in and you're out. A family lost their mother and Sarah answers an ad in the paper. They write letters back and forth. Sarah goes from Maine to the plains. The kids love Sarah. There is a big Squall to be the big piece of this book.
It was a quick, enjoyable read. If you loved Little house on the Prairie, then you need to read this too. Great for 3rd and 4th grade readers.

I know I read this as a child, but couldn’t remember it at all. It’s a cute story.
Lovely and heartwarming. In fewer than 60 pages of beautiful, economical prose that never talks down to its young audience, MacLachlan tells a poignant tale of longing, hope, and love. She brings her small cast of characters to life (sweet Caleb!) and paints a vivid picture of late-19th century life on the plains. Deceptively simple, full of rich emotion and truth. I teared up more than once while reading this. I wish all children's books were so well-written! A real classic.
Ok book for kids. Short and sweet and wholesome. Lots of hope.
Nice book, but quite short. One doesn't get to know the characters properly.

I forgot how wonderful this book is. Reading it as a short story rather than a children's book made it more poignant.
This book was a childhood book of mine. I don't really understand why but I felt I had really strong feelings towards this book. As I read this now I don't recall anything except the name Caleb and that is mainly because it felt like a unique name at the time.
But my review starts now...
This was an interesting story. It told a slight story of Sarah from the perspective of Anna. She is never physically described as anything but "plain and tall" but she is an empowered woman as she often mentions that even though she can cook and clean she can do and learn much more than that. I also really appreciated how the emotions of Anna and Caleb are expressed especially how they have been dealing with the death of their mother and a new woman coming into their lives. Overall solid book and since I have always had a weird connection to this book and just recently found an old copy in my house I decided to give it a solid 4 stars. (Not a 5 stars because there isn't much too extraordinary but overall very readable and lovely book)
