There is a lot more being said in these pages than just the words that are written.

* I was gifted this book from my second grade teacher with an inscription at the end of the school year.

It may be very short and it may be a book meant for little kids, but it's so well written and such a good story, I can't help but love it.

3.5 stars I wanted a longer book. But seeing there are multiple books, I guess I'll have to read those! Reminded me of Little House on the Prairie.

A simple, sweet story of children on the frontier who get a new mother. Good, old-fashioned story that could be read over and over. Sarah is fun, sweet, and surprising and the descriptions in the story are nearly musical. A true classic, especially for young girls. Similar to Little House on the Prairie. All ages.

My mother is a retired librarian, and this was one of the books she recommended most frequently for young readers. Now many years into retirement, she still suggests it regularly.

Anna and Caleb live on the prairie with their papa. Mama died from childbirth complications, and the house feels hollow now that Papa doesn't sing anymore.

Sarah comes from Maine for a one-month trial period to see if she and Papa might want to marry. Sarah is plain and tall, which is probably why she hasn't yet found a husband. But she has the inner beauty and a lot of lovable qualities the prettier girls don't always offer. Sarah brings a quiet patience, a love of song, a joy in nature and all beauty, a sense of fun and mischief, and most important, adaptability.

As the trial period progresses, Anna and Caleb fall ever more in love with Sarah. They watch anxiously for signs that she might not be planning to stay, rejoicing when she shows any little possibility of putting down roots. They're watching Papa, too, hoping he'll be as fond of Sarah as they are.

This story is a model of perfect simplicity. Read it and you, too, might fall in love with Sarah. It's not often that a children's book will move me to tears, but this one did at the end.

It has been ages since I read this book, and I was surprised how much I remembered from it, down to specific phrases. It is absolutely gorgeous in its simplicity. I'm reading and re-reading a bazillion children's books right now for my masters program (sooo hard I know) and this was such a lovely way to kick things off.

It’s a good quick read but very basic. No depth. I know its aimed at a younger audience and i am rereading based on the memories of reading it in school as a child. But i was still surprised at what little detail and depth there was to the characters and plot.

This was such a cute and sweet kids book! It was nice to read something short, simple, and full of innocence. Found this book in a free library and honestly would read this to my kids in the future (lmao definitely not anytime soon!)

Great read with my 2nd grader. Really enjoyed the story of family and love.
