Assassin's Creed: Renaissance by Oliver Bowden
⭐⭐⭐ (3 Stars)
⭐⭐⭐ (3 Stars)
Okay, historical fiction isn't usually my jam—but I dipped my toes into the waters of Renaissance Italy with Assassin’s Creed: Renaissance, and I've got to say, it was an intriguing ride, even if it wasn't exactly my cup of tea.
Picture this: Italy’s ruling families stab Ezio Auditore in the back (figuratively... mostly), igniting his fierce quest for vengeance. Corruption, betrayal, and shady politics? Check, check, and check. Ezio must master the shadowy art of the Assassins if he's got any chance of restoring his family's honor. Dramatic enough, right?
While the plot kept things interesting, the pacing felt a bit leisurely for my taste—I prefer a thriller that keeps my heart racing, and this one jogged rather than sprinted. And if you're here for jaw-dropping plot twists that'll leave you staring at a wall, reconsidering your entire existence, you might want to keep browsing.
However, let’s talk characters! Leonardo da Vinci—yes, THAT Leonardo—was my absolute favorite. He's basically Ezio’s version of James Bond’s Q, supplying nifty inventions and weapon upgrades. Leonardo's quirky brilliance brought life (and a bit of charm) to the pages, making his scenes genuine highlights.
The theme is pretty straightforward: revenge (served Renaissance-style). If you've got a soft spot for meticulously detailed historical settings and complex vendettas, then you'll probably appreciate the immersive journey Bowden takes you on.
Would I recommend it? Sure! Particularly to historical fiction enthusiasts, Assassin’s Creed fans, or anyone who’s fascinated by the intrigue and glamour of Renaissance Italy. As for me, it lands at a solid 3 stars—good enough to enjoy, but not enough to convert me into a historical fiction devotee just yet!
- I’ve heard a lot over the video games, never played them though, and I was intrigued about the vibe that was created around the character.
- The story talks about the more than 20 years of the life of Ezio Auditore, but sometimes I was not aware of the fact that multiple years had pasted until it was actually mentioned in the text.
- Because of the above bullet a love things happen in the book, a consequence is that there is not a lot of room for detailed descriptions.
- This is not a bad thing, however, details where only given where they really added value to story.
- The last 25 pages give you a whole different feeling compared to the other pages.
- First, I was of the opinion that I might not read the second book of the series, but the bullet above changed that. This is definitely a series to follow up on.

It was flat.
The dialogue was so game like, I half expected 'new quest unlocked' to pop up in the corner of my kindle.
Everything was too easy, he killed all his enemies, happened to hear every important conversation, found bits of the codex (the most valuable thing) conveniently in his enemies wallets.
The transaction from game to book just felt like all the boring bits of the game.
