There is something extremely unpleasant about the tone of this - attempting humour and whimsy but fundamentally cruel and mean. I can't understand the motivations of the main characters, it's all very masculine in a bad way, and it's horribly overwritten. Not vibing with it.

The best book I’ve read all year, or perhaps one of the best books I’ve read at all. I’d never have thought to pick this up, my dad insisted that I read it and I’m glad I did. It’s comedic and tragic, universal and particular, and written with so much searing and gentle humanity that I can’t describe quite how moved I am.  

I’ve never studied classics, and I know nothing about the plays that make it up, but the book is written in an accessible way so you don’t need to.

Not for me, not at this moment anyway. I was told this was a fun novel but gah ! Not at all ! And as I have not been sleeping well recently, reading about people starving/dying/being beaten in a quarry and doomed to die, even with an Irish accent, is not attractive.
Maybe I'll pick it up later, but I'm not sure.
