não sei vocês mas EU não tenho interesse num romance quando 90% dos problemas da trama são misoginia "ah mas ele é diferente" FODASSE

I tried so hard to like this but I think I’m just not in the right mood for it. Don’t know that I’ll ever be in the mood for any kind of dark academia though :/

I absolutely loved Juniper and Thorn so this was a disappointing follow up for me. The world building was cool but I didn't particularly care for our main characters and the mystery was so easily solved I found myself mad at them for not figuring it out sooner. Also, I just can't get over how insane Effy's reaction to finding out someone checked out a library book she wanted was. Overall it wasn't bad, just no where near as good as her last book.

having anticipated this book for months, i do admit i may have slightly sabotaged myself with high expectations, since I know Ava Reid is capable of brilliant things (ie The Juniper Tree). also, this is her first YA, which was unfortunately painfully obvious as it adhered to every stereotypical cliché of a YA novel. HOWEVER, i really really enjoyed this book and the world building was absolutely incredible, with the creation of a whole new literary universe being of significant interest to me. the settings and the plot were excellent, yet i do wish that everything the book promised had been carried out as i was left a bit unsatisfied at the end. + i wish she had gone more into the whole fairy king lore that was my favourite bit but was only mentioned sporadically and infrequently!

I listened to the audiobook in preparation for the second book, and even though I already knew the twists, I was reminded of how much I adore Ava Reid’s prose. I was hesitant to reread it, thinking I might not like it as much but I was wrong. The writing is just as lyrical and atmospheric, the way I like it, and I think the themes hit me even harder this time around. Not to mention, I related once again to Effy’s struggle with anxiety. While the fantasy elements still don’t always make complete sense to me, they take a backseat to what truly stands out: Effy’s inner thoughts and the way the story confronts how women are often gaslit into blaming themselves for the harm done to them. I still stand by my original take from almost two years ago: the romance is secondary. At it’s core, this book is a haunting reflection of rape culture and the ways women continue to suffer under patriarchal systems.
