Fictionalized account of Gettysburg is required reading for a "leadership" class taught on the Gettysburg battlefield.

The most startling, heart-wrenching, beautifully brilliant book on war that I have ever read. By telling the story of the battle of Gettysburg from both the Union and Confederate sides, Shaara humanizes these legendary (and some infamous) actors of that fateful conflict in the most remarkable ways. Shaara's words and the deeds of these men won't soon leave my mind. Just a stunning read.

tbh i had to read this for class but it was so beautifully written that i can't even be mad about it

Life given to these men in battle so long ago. Visceral response to the words on the page. Great book.

This is one of the best Civil War novels ever written. It makes you feel like you are actually there, experiencing every minute of those four days in Gettysburg. Very well written.

Arguably the greatest book ever written in the English language. Shaara won a Pulitzer for it for a reason.

Sad book which makes you realize how futile Gettysburg was for the South - they lost before they started.

Amazing. Beautiful. Read perfectly in the audiobook.

Lost Cause apologetics aside, this remains an all time favorite and perhaps the single greatest influence of my life in regard to warfare, American history and the most pivotal three days of the war.
