FIRST LINE REVIEW: “He rode into the dark of the woods and dismounted.” Full of short, clear, often poetic, often piercing sentences, this classic novel about the Gettysburg battle was both moving and educational. When I toured Gettysburg a few years ago, I added this novel to my reading list and it finally rose to the top. Now I need to return to Gettysburg and walk the fields with the new depth of perception provided by this power novel. Both horrific and deeply human, it presents the events of the three-day battle through the very personal eyes of some key figures who were there, trying to survive and, more importantly, understand what it was all about.

I've been hearing about Killer Angels for quite some time and I finally picked it up. I'm glad I did. It certainly puts that drivel that Newt Gingrich tried to foist on us to shame. This was a book with passion, feeling, and a complete grasp of the battlefield through the eyes of its generals and colonels that day, so many years ago when we fought each other for the fate of our nation. This short novel took me to that day in a way no class, textbook, or story has to date.
Do yourselves a favor and read this, even if you've never cared about the Civil War. It's worth it.

I usually don't read non-fiction but I read an article in which Jim Collins (best known as the author of Good to Great) said this was the best book on leadership he had ever read, so I figured I'd give it a try. I was not disappointed.
This book covers the 3 days of the Battle of Gettysburg, telling the story from the perspective of multiple people on both sides. Every moment of the three days comes alive as you see it through various sets of eyes. I truly came to care for each of the characters because the writing gives you a sense of each person as a human being - a father who lost all of his young children in the matter of a few days, a friend forced to chose between his orders and his promise to never take arms against his best friend, a college professor who's men have run out of ammunition but have to hold the line against an advancing army.
Yes, the book could be read as a lesson on different leadership styles but I think it's more compelling as a book about people doing their best in a situation they could never have imagined and how each person's choices and ability came together to decide the fate of a nation.

an okay, forgettable read. was interesting learning about the missteps and decisions made by key confederate leaders that contributed to the battle’s outcome. liked getting perspectives from key figures on both sides of the battle but was hard keeping track of all the ppl referenced. ultimately wished i was bored less while reading it
