Slate is insufferable -- rude, immature, and condescending. I can't stand his chapters. Cadence isn't interesting enough to keep reading.
Moderate: Ableism
Minor: Child abuse, Sexual assault, Suicide, Death of parent
4.5 Stars!
I deducted half a star because Cadence was kinda naive about some things and she let herself be manipulated too easily. She's only 17 and lives a pretty sheltered life, so I guess it's understandable, but it still made me to want to shake her sometimes, and if I end up shaking my Kindle, well, it just... automatically shakes off half a star.

A mysterious, fun and a bit spooky journey from a group of people trying to break a curse in a quite peculiar French town. I loved how the design of the town merges with its legends and on the other hand, how some loyalties are questionable (everybody looked suspicious to me, I never knew who I could trust).
Somehow I missed a bit more clear motivation from the characters before jumping to this risky adventure, but I love a group of people working together in unexpected ways. It was definitely a journey that grabbed me from the beginning to end (oh, how I enjoyed reading Slate! So irreverent and at the same time so unapologetically demonstrating his love for his brother!)...
Read this book in record time and definitely going for the second book when it comes out...!
**I voluntarily read an early copy of this book through Netgalley. Thank you to the authors. All views are my own.

fast-paced
The question is can they break the curse in time? Wow! This book is fantastic. I love the world of magic that these two amazing authors created!
I enjoyed this modern day fantasy set in a fictional small French town. A curse, a love story, an unlikely squad working on a shared goal to save a life and bring magic back to the world. The humor made me both roll my eyes and smile, and once the adventure began I couldn't put it down. The YA writing made for a fast read but I found the character development to be just a bit shallow. Still, a fun read and I am looking forward to the next installment.
This is an arc I received from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The review is honest and spoiler free.
I listened to the audiobook for this one and I can’t believe that something paranormal can sound so delightful. It was a beautiful story with punches and romance and lots of magic. The narrators’ voice just perfectly suited every situation and also their personalities that I had made up in my mind. It was so so much fun reading it.
I was unable to stop listening to it. It got me so hyped up that every moment that I had, even if it was for 5 minutes, I would just listen to the book. The plot and story line was so well thought on and presented in such a brilliant way. I was scared at first to listen to such a big audiobook but when I actually started it took me like only 3-4 days to complete the 15 hours long audiobook.
I am so grateful to have read this. I rated it a 5-star but I really wanted to rate it high while I was in the middle of the book. The reason I didn’t do it is because I had a high expectations from the ending f the book and I was not as I expected it to. I mean it was awesome and beautiful but I expected something more like the way the ending was formed with so much surprise elements I expected a little more. But I really really really loved the book and highly recommend this audiobook.

So this was a random pick while filling out a survey for Netgalley’s app, the audiobook portion. I grabbed the ebook since the audiobook had some glitches through the app.
It took me sometime to get into the story and found myself zoning out, but after 20% I was devouring every single word. From the characters, even though I was more invested in Slate than Cadence. However, with this being a series, there’s no doubt that we’ll see more character development with Cadence. We definitely saw a little glimpse of it at the end of the book.
I had trouble deciphering if this would be a YA or NA. I’m a romance reader and there’s some elements that seemed to cross over into the NA category.
I’m definitely invested in this magical world and the characters, the narrators were great, but think the ebook suits me better.
What an enjoyable read from two new to me authors, can’t wait for the next book.

At first, I wasn't sure how much I was going to like this book, early on I was thinking to myself it's not bad but probably a 3 star. I'm not going to get drawn into this one. I was wrong, I most definitely got drawn in. The story was fun and quick-paced. There was action, some romance, magical history, small-town lore, and a lot to be enjoyed. If you enjoy enemies to loves from opposite sides of the tracks, history and magical lore or books where the place is just as important as who then give this book a shot.
This book is told from the alternating perspective of our two lead characters Slate and Candence. I like Slate he definitely is book boyfriend material with his tough yet charming exterior and strong conviction that he will never love while also immediately falling in love and doing all he can to protect those he loves.
Cadence, on the other hand, I found a bit annoying and naive, with time she grew on me but I preferred Slate's perspective. I was glad in the end she got her chance to fight her own battle on her own without help from the boys.
Brume was a fun and interesting place and a good setting, I enjoyed the frozen small school town vibe the bits of delicious food mixed in, and would be intrigued to visit a place such as this.
My biggest issue with the book came down to the narration. Overall I enjoyed both narrators when they narrated characters of the same sex as them but when either of them did the voice for the character of the opposing sex I hated it, in particular the male narrator's version of Cadence. But I loved his Slate voice. With time or during longer listening sessions I would get used to it but it did irritate me throughout and I am curious to get a physical copy to read and see how it changes the experience.
All said and done I enjoyed listening to this book and will definitely check out the next one in the series.
