I think I just wasn’t in the right mindset for this book yet. I’m going to give it a retry in a few weeks.

The line that made me break down you ask?

"I would untie him if I could. If he would let me."

RIP my heart.

"I am made of memories."

"I would know him in death, at the end of the world."

The love story of Patroclus and Achilles that I never knew was missing from my life. This book was heartbreakingly beautiful.

The Song of Achilles is a pretty faithful interpretation of the original Iliad in more modern language. It tries to keep the action and cunning of the original, while also including a compelling romance only implied in the original piece (and honestly, the romance was the most well-done portion of the book). And I think it does exactly what it set out to do!

My only two complaints about this book are, I think, issues that anyone would have coming from the original source material: in that there are many sections of the Iliad that just aren't all that interesting (personally speaking!) so they're a bit of a slog to get through in the modern adaptation, and that there are many sections of the Iliad that are horrifying with modern contexts and culture, so they're a bit of a jolt in the modern adaptation.
