Read this as part of a book club for work. I struggle with books like this. The information was overall helpful and the tools and practices easily able to be implemented. The issue I have with most books like this is that I don't think they actually need to be a book. The first 10 pages tells you exactly what the book is about, what it will address, and some of the ideas around dissecting the parts. Then the next 150 pages overly describes in painstaking detail every single concept, with numerous similar examples. Then the last 10 pages does a great recap, with all the bullets you would have needed to have understood all the information, without actually having to have read the book. Like I said, I liked the concepts and the tools, but this book could have easily been an article in my opinion.

This book was a great entry into starting to read more this year. It was very informative while still being captivating to the reader. Kross inspires the reader to harness their inner voice through real world engaging stories. I highly recommend this book to anyone. I feel that everyone will take something positive to improve their inner voice

My review mostly pertains to the version I used - the audiobook. I regret it!

The author is actually a great narrator, which I don’t often say about audiobooks (that’s why I usually avoid them). My personal issue is that there were so many good nuggets and things I wanted to highlight and I…couldn’t do that. I think I’ll have to stick with print or ebooks for my nonfiction book consumption.

So with that said, the book wasn’t entirely groundbreaking but had good stories and tips and was easy to get through. If I had it in print or digital, it would definitely be marked up and referenced when I find myself getting sidetracked by chatter. Unfortunately, as audio, most of it is out of my head already.

2.5 stars - i was really excited to read this after hearing the author on "armchair expert" and really enjoying his interview. however, the book was dull, and I didn't find the information to be enough to hold my attention. as someone who has been in therapy for years and has done meditation practice, the details outlined in this book are all things i was already aware of. the anecdotes and pop culture references are so brief that they feel tacked on just for "interest" and the book is mostly detailing different studies. disappointing.

Reframe your chatter by referring to yourself in your head in the second person. Go into nature. Zoom out to have a fly on the wall perspective when you’re in the chatter. Rituals and placebos work. Seek what inspires awe.
