Enjoyed the first few chapters. Food for thought.
Kross' book is not targetted towards people with mental health conditons. However, I'm unsure how well this book helps for people with mental health conditions, it's more suited towards people with 'normal' worries, maybe GAD. But for example the final chapter talks about partaking in rituals which would be harmful advice to people with or predisposed to OCD.

Wish the techniques were included throughout--kept waiting--but they are summarized at the end. Wish there was a little more on human evolution and the origin of the inner voice (or some of the theories on this). Still a fascinating ride with very interesting stories on what happens when you lose that inner voice or fail to harness it!

I had high expectations for this book because of all the 4 & 5 star ratings, but it fell short for me. I felt it was a bit all over the place flipping back and forth between case studies and all of the information just got a bit lost and jumbled. I ended up skimming the last few chapters hoping it would pick up, but it was mostly more of the same. I can see how some would enjoy this book but it just wasn't for me.

This book was a bit underwhelming as less insightful than expected or hoped for. While there were some interesting research topics discussed, I did not gain much if anything from the tips and tricks mentioned. It would be interesting to see this book written with a greater focus on psychopathology and directed toward those with clinically abnormal “mental chatter” in comparison to the average person not dealing with mental illness. I found that a lot of his tips to deal with chatter revolved around creating order in your life when you feel like everything else isn’t in your control and distancing yourself from your emotions (via third person language). I found this interestingly ironic as the majority of mental illnesses in some way manifest as creating “order” in your life to an extent that becomes harmful to a person’s wellbeing and quality of life OR they stem from the fear of not being in control (this is true for numerous disorders including anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive related disorders, eating disorders, and even some personality disorders). But the irony in his tips is that a lot of them have already been implemented in my life but to an unhealthy extent that is termed as a mental illness (even his tips on distancing yourself from your emotions and identity which, if taken too far in a psychopathological sense, and lead to dissociation, depersonalization, derealization, and alexithymia to name a few). So, in conclusion, I did not find this book particularly helpful for myself, however, it might provide some helpful tips to those dealing with the typical amount of mental chatter that doesn’t greatly interfere with their life (in a clinical sense).
