A short, practical book filled with easy ways to calm that voice in your head.
3.5 stars. Similar to a lot of other pop psychology books I have read. Great content and some new info but mostly presents familiar information in a slightly different way. Probably will be more impactful for a more general audience/people with less knowledge about psychology
I feel like this book was full of good information and things that have made me think and there are still nuggets that are going through my head.

Chatter by Ethan Kross. I first became aware of this book when Ethan was interviewed on @armchairexpert, my favorite podcast. The interview blew my mind. I have struggled with chatter - my inner voice can be incessantly nagging and at times cruel - almost my entire life. And despite years of therapy with therapists that I respected and love, and tons of self-work, I wasn’t offered any real solutions for dealing with it. When Ethan discussed his experiences with chatter, it resonated so much that I immediately went out and bought his book. Like, “finished the pod, got in the car, bought the book” immediately. The advice offered in here is simple and powerfully presented, reinforced with compelling personal stories and rigorous scientific backing. And I have to say, it’s legitimately helped me. The other day, I was ruminating on my car ride home, dwelling on a situation I wanted to go one way that went another. As I crossed through an intersection, I confronted my chatter with tools from this book. I asked myself, “Jessica, so what? It didn’t work out. You’ll move on. You’ve done it before. What are you going to do now to get what you want?” I used multiple tools from the book on this simple exchange with myself - distanced self-talk (second-person), perspective broadening, and reframing my experience. Suddenly, everything was so much less urgent and stressful. I’m sure I’ve done this before, but being able to see it in action and to know I’ll be able to harness it in the future definitely feels like a level up. Recommended.
