This book is set in Chile and China in the 1800's and then California during the gold rush, places and times I knew nothing about so it was interesting to read. The main protagonist is a strong female character which I always enjoy - I get frustrated when I read books where I don't like any of the characters!

Someone saw me reading this book and recommended The House of the Spirits by the same author so that is my "to read" list now.

It started out slow and I felt overloaded with characters. I kept reading though and the story started to pull me in. I really enjoyed Toa Chi'en and his story. But I got tired of Eliza searching for a man who cleay didn't want to actually be with her. The ending was very abrupt.

Not sure I've read much (if any) historical fiction before (since it's not my favorite genre) so I don't have much to compare it to. Story's kind of depressing, characters aren't too compelling, but an easy read. The relationship with Tao felt a bit forced.

Allende is an author I've heard a lot about, but I'd never read anything by her. I'm glad I did!

Eliza is an orphan raised by three siblings in Chile. Their life is fascinating--I loved the information given about how whites live in Chile in the early 1800s and how the locals are treated. Eventually Eliza falls in love with a man she shouldn't, and she leaves Chile for California to find him during the Gold Rush. Along the way, she has many adventures--stowing away in a ship, dressing like a man, learning medicine, and befriending a Chinese herbalist.

I love good historical fiction, and this one had me hooked. I wanted to keep driving so I didn't have to stop listening! Blair Brown was a great narrator, too. Her voice was very pleasing and didn't distract from the story at all.

I got this book as a gift when I was in the hospital. I don't really remember a lot about it because my concentration wasn't very good at the time. I had to reread pages several times. That's NOT a reflection on the author; it's just how I was at the time.
