This started out very slow and I found the characters uninteresting at first, but this one picks up about a third of the way in and the interactions and relationships between the characters become the driving force of the book. I love that there is a diverse group of characters, you get the full feeling of culture clashing and people fighting over their cultural and gender differences as well as struggling to find common ground so they can develop relationships.

There are three or four key chapters where things become increasingly interesting. The ending is abrupt, but it stays with you. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it.

This would make a great book club read. I feel like I needed to talk to someone about it afterwards or get therapy or maybe both. XD

Look, since Barack Obama, I'll forgive Oprah for just about anything, but I SWEAR she completely ruined Isabel Allende, who, since she hit the "Oprah's Book Club" has not produced ANYTHING worth reading. Blah. This is the star example. Yech. Maybe it was better translated into English. But I doubt it.

This book starts slow but the Gold Rush and later scenes were great. Love the story of this as told with Chilean and Chinese protagonists, not to mention several English characters. Surprisingly few Americans for a book largely set in California, but that's part of the point.
