DID NOT FINISH

Depressing. After the first story, I promised I would continue if the second wasn’t as depressing. I didn’t continue.

this book made me look at my life more closely, trees that have affected the way my life moved, and how much the world needs our help. how quickly we move compared to so many aspects of the world. it made me cry twice which never happens !! i think it is maybe a new favorite-of-all-time book. a work of genius.

DID NOT FINISH: 50%

So technically, I DNFed this book at 50% (12 HRS IN???). But it's so worth the read if you're able to sit through it.

Here's what I'll say. This book is fantastic. The writing is so intriguing, and how Powers explores nature and life, and their interconnection, is genuinely some of the best writing I've ever read. The format is extremely unique, but I do think it contributes to what I struggled with in this book (particularly in reading the audiobook, if you're reading this, have a physical, it's so worth it). The way Powers approaches disability is also very refreshing and nuanced.

This book is so fucking long. Genuinely, this book should have been 2 books, so the interactions in the trunk section could be more meaningful and focused. I was constantly going back and forth trying to figure out and remember who was who and whose stories belonged to whom, because there were so many characters and so many themes. All individually made a lot of sense, but putting merging the world blurred a fuck ton of lines. That being said, I kinda get it? Like, it makes sense, it's complicated, but Jesus.

An incredible achievement in storytelling. The structure alone is enough to leave you in awe; add to that an inspired profundity, so effectively communicated, about cycles of life and the balance in all things. The journey Powers takes you on, from hope to despair and back to something like hope again, feels magical and so grounded all at once. This novel is something truly special.
