Started off interesting, but lost me along the way. I just couldn’t connect with the characters, and the romance between the two leads felt forced. The action was supposed to be a big draw, but that fell flat for me. Pacing was weird; first half dragged and it felt like it took forever to explain what was actually happening. Nate spent way too much time panicking, which got old fast and seemed generally inconsistent with the type of character he should’ve been. There was barely any tension. The villain felt mediocre; zero threat, zero urgency. Then we threw in another bad guy way too late in the story, which just felt random. And for all the slow buildup, some parts were way too predictable. It’s not terrible, but definitely my least favourite from TJ Klune.

Not my favourite TJ Kline. The story was fun, but not really up my alley. And holy crap did it even not expect the intensely graphic sex scene. That was raunchy in the worst way. Thankfully there was only one.
Don’t expect it to be like House in the Cerulean Sea or Under the Whispering Door because it’s not. It’s a high action book about aliens with that uncomfortable sex scene that felt like it was written by a teenaged boy.
And the banter. I didn’t like that either. It’s almost like TJ forgot how to write. I just felt like I was reading something written by someone who wished they were an author but hadn’t yet honed their skills the whole way through it.
I’m rambling. But I just finished reading 400 pages of rambling, so forgive me!
