4 ⭐️ Natalie’s brother and sister don’t speak to her anymore. It’s been 15 years since that horrible night, but they’ve never called and have all moved on with their lives. When their mother dies, she leaves them a family estate - but only if they all come together in their childhood home again. Natalie lives in Boston, has a career, and a boyfriend, but has never felt resolved about what happened. She heads back to California to fulfill her mothers dying wish, and confront her past.
I enjoyed this book. I flew through it and it was a decent summer read, taking place for most of the story in Santa Cruz CA and referencing marine life, the beach, and sea spray often throughout. I found myself rooting for each of the characters and enjoyed the ending. I was frustrated by a few things left unresolved and the character seemingly playing dumb about her own life when she could have solved MANY problems much easier than she did, but hey that’s life sometimes. Overall, I enjoyed it.

Very Good book. Natalie goes to Santa Cruz and meets up with siblings that she hasn’t had contact with for years. Jake, Natalie and Lynn.

The premise drew me in, but the poor writing and absurd, but not at all funny, assumptions, beliefs and actions drove me crazy. I finished because I wanted to see things concluded, but the ending fell flat. A waste of time.
The narrator was excellent. The story started pretty strongly. It hinted at mystery, maybe a bit of a thriller as the mystery was solved and then... everything fizzled out and had banal resolutions. Rounded up to 3 stars.
Story has a lot of potential, but the prose needs a hard edit for awkward, stilted writing and spots that are flat out grammatically wrong. In addition, in the final scene in the supply closet, Godfrey completes drops that fact that Natalie has been working around decomposing sea mammal for hours and is also smeared with VapoRub. I would think that would have an impact on the conversation that follows . . . BUT MAYBE THAT'S JUST ME!
